Ms. Eda Semerci

I received my Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Engineering from Middle East Technical University (METU), Turkey, graduating as the top student in my department. During my undergraduate studies, I also participated in an Erasmus exchange program at the Aarhus University in Denmark, with a focus on urban water management.

In 2024, I began my Master’s degree in Environmental Engineering at Hamburg University of Technology (TUHH). During my first year, I worked as a student research assistant and tutor across laboratories at the Institute of Water Resources and Water Supply and the Institute of Wastewater Management and Water Protection. During my studies, the coursework in geoinformatics sparked a strong interest in remote sensing and microplastic-related analysis, leading me to pursue my current research.

Currently, I am conducting research at the Institute of Geo-Hydroinformatics (GHI) for my study work class. My project focuses on the identification and characterization of various microplastics using a Spectral Evolution NaturaSpec Ultra spectroradiometer coupled with DARWin software. Specifically, I investigate how factors such as particle size, concentration, photo-oxidation, weathering, color, and matrix interference influence microplastic spectral signatures, and explore how these findings can contribute to advancing hyperspectral imaging technologies.
