Dr. Azin Zarei

I obtained my BSc and Master’s in Natural Resource Engineering from the University of Tehran, where I was a Brilliant Talent student. I earned my PhD in Natural Resource and Earth Sciences from the University of Shahrekord, focusing on climate change impacts on vegetation dynamics. During my PhD, I contributed as a Visiting Researcher to the UNESCO International Hydrological Programme (IHP) and the International Drought Initiative (IDI) in Paris, France, in 2015.
Afterward, I conducted postdoctoral research at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) in Germany, where I have been engaged in large-scale studies on grassland net primary productivity (NPP) in Tanzania since 2019. My research focuses on assessing the effects of climate change on vegetation cover using remote sensing, GIS, and statistical models, with an emphasis on identifying vulnerable areas to degradation and monitoring vegetation dynamics.
Since 2022, I have been a Research Associate at the United Nations University (UNU-FLORES) in Germany, applying systems-thinking approaches to integrate data on water, soil, waste, and energy for sustainable resource management. I am also involved in the Resource Nexus Analytics, Informatics, and Data (AID) project.
