Co-creating socio-ecological transformation of climate change governance in North German
The Cluster of Excellence Climate, Climatic Change, and Society (CLICCS) provides substantive scientific answers to the question: Which climate futures are plausible, and how can desired climate futures be realized? Within CLICCS II the Institute of River and Coastal Engineering is co-leading the project A5 “Co-creating socio-ecological transformation of climate change governance in North Germany” and mainly working in the topic Adaptation in the A5 work package WP2: Nature-based solutions for coastal protection on the islands Amrum and Föhr. The research builds on the results of the CLICCS project C3 “Sustainable Adaptation Scenarios for Coastal Systems”.
A5 has the main project objective to analyze the integration of transformation theories, socio-ecological, and action research for adaptation. It will use a transdisciplinary approach to investigate how present adaptation could be improved by empirically engaging with plausible, desired, and desirable climate futures (WP1) and how they can be realized in the cases of eutrophication and agriculture in the river Elbe (WP3) and nature-based solutions (NbS) in coastal protection on the North Frisian Islands of Amrum and Föhr in WP2. The analysis (WP4) is based on our cooperative scenario work in CLICCS and will study existing path dependencies and contrast them with newly developing connections (an openness to do coastal protection differently in North Frisia) to scrutinize emergent socio-ecological phenomena and steer changes through co-development and co-production.
Overall, A5 addresses the following research question: How can sustainable climate change adaptation governance be improved by the cooperative development of socio-ecological transformation pathways?
