Our UIF Projects

Every year, the fellows at TUHH work on exciting projects that you can explore here. The focus of these projects is always to advance entrepreneurship and innovation, fostering a creative community at TUHH.

2025: Buddy-Program

The Buddy Program is a student-led initiative designed to support international students in their transition to life in Hamburg and at TUHH.

Through structured mentorship, social events, and peer support, the program fosters cross-cultural friendships, eases orientation, and creates a welcoming, inclusive campus culture. Each semester, international students are matched with experienced local or exchange-returned students, forming a community that shares knowledge, builds connections, and helps everyone thrive.

Goal: A self-sustaining student culture of care, where students help students — academically, socially, and culturally.

2024: Impact Week: Sustainability

Impact Week Poster
Impact Week Poster

Together with TUHH students who were ready to make a difference on campus, our fellows created the Impact Week Sustainability! Students like you became the leaderso for change and impact!

The inspiring week featured workshops in which students gained insights on creative ideation and effective prototyping and explores ways to make a lasting impact on campus sustainability with their peers. We are still thrilled about the vibe and ideas!

2024 (FIF): Promoting a more sustainable TUHH

In this Faculty Innovation Fellow project, Dr. Svenja Damberg and Luise Degen have taken on the task of strengthening awareness of sustainability issues on campus! This topic also plays a significant role in their research.

As part of the project, they bridge the gap between academia, industry, and startups. At the core of the project is a map showcasing sustainable initiatives in and around Hamburg, bringing together key stakeholders. This creates a space for the development of long-term sustainability projects that provide real value to society.

At the Faculty Innovation Fellow Meetup at the University of Twente in April 2024, Svenja and Luise presented their project results and thus successfully completed the two-year project. Despite completing the project, both will continue to work on the initiative.

2023: Campus App T-You

The time has come for a campus app that gives students the opportunity to easily stay informed about upcoming events, workshops, and the latest campus news at any time. The introduction of such an app doesn't happen overnight. Together with various stakeholders like the AStA (General Students' Committee) and the computing center, we are creating a design that offers our students maximum value.

Before we move on to implementation, we need your feedback! Feel free to try out our prototype and leave us comments on what can be further improved:

If you are interested in shaping the digital campus future yourself and have ideas for the app, please email us and join the team.

2022 (FIF): mindfulstartup.school

From 2020 to 2022, the Faculty Innovation Fellow (FIF) program took place for the first time, and in 2022, Dr. Malte Krohn was appointed as one of the first Faculty Innovation Fellows.

Driving change is hard work, whether you're a founder or an innovator. Mindfulness can be an important companion on this journey. As part of his project, Dr. Malte Krohn wrote the book "The Mindful Startup," subsequently founded mindfulstartup.school, and brings the topic of mindfulness into the world of startups, innovation, and change agents in his work.

2021: TUHH Ideenschmiede (Idea Forge)

The Ideenschmiede (Idea Forge) is a student working group aimed at fostering the exchange among individuals interested in innovation and entrepreneurship. Initially conceived as a creative physical space where students could come together to share, discuss, and pitch innovative ideas, the Ideenschmiede transformed into a virtual space (using GatherTown) due to the pandemic. It has further evolved into an official working group (AG) that organizes events such as Design Thinking workshops and networking sessions with startups.

2020: Keep calm & let's get sustainable

The online event "Keep calm and let's get sustainable!" on the topic of sustainability took place on April 30, 2020. It included digital presentations and discussion panels via video conferencing. Speakers included Joana Gil from the startup LignoPure, TUHH Professor Kerstin Kuchta from the Institute of Environmental Technology and Energy Economics, and Matthias Böing, a former manager and environmental activist who cleans beaches from trash in Norway. "The goal of the event is to develop new innovative concepts and solutions, and to bring together various disciplines, research topics, and above all, people at TU Hamburg," says UIF member Merle Marie Doliwa. "We want to organize an event that fosters inspiration and creativity at TUHH. Interdisciplinary exchange is very important to us."

2019: Funkenflug (Flying Sparks)

To simplify the structures at TUHH, we launched the Funkenflug project. In collaboration with students, professors, and staff members of TUHH, our first step was to identify issues in the daily campus life. Through an online voting process, all TUHH members could submit improvement suggestions and vote for their favorites. In the second step, TUHH teams were formed to develop ideas for solving five main problems in an event. "From wishes, we want to collectively work out idea-sparking solutions that bring benefits to all members of TUHH," explained team spokesperson Jonas Köster, outlining the goal of Funkenflug.
