Abstract: It has become obvious that modern ships suffer from problems related to their seakeepingbehavior, which is mainly related to large amplitude roll motion in head and following seas. As these effects are not covered by the existing intact stability criteria, an additional concept is developed. This new concept allows to quantify the risk of the occurrence of large roll angles by calculating a capsizing index based on the results of numerical simulations. This paper presents the ideas and concepts behind the new approach. Additionally to the simulation based approach a simplified criterion is developed which addresses the same hazards but without the need to carry out numerical simulations. For validation and the determination of suitable threshold values a number of capsizing accidents, which occurred during the last 50 years were analysed. An example of this work will be presented in this paper.
