Objective
The aim of the lightweight practical design course is to impart in-depth knowledge of the design and manufacture of high-performance composite materials for lightweight components. The focus is on modeling and simulation using numerical methods as well as the implementation and optimization of the manufacturing process.
Scope
The participants' task is to work in teams to design a bending beam made of fiber-reinforced plastic composite materials that has the best possible strength-to-weight ratio. With the support of tutors, the beams are to be designed and manufactured independently. The design is carried out using the finite element method (FEM). Finally, the beams are weighed and tested for strength in a 4-point bending test. The team with the best strength-to-weight ratio is awarded a prize.
