Programme Overview

On 23 September 2026, the Hamburg International Conference for Logistics (HICL) will host its PhD Seminar. The event is designed for doctoral researchers and early-career academics who would like to strengthen key skills in academic writing, Open Science, and scientific publishing.

The seminar combines practical input from experienced scholars with opportunities for discussion, exchange, and networking. Throughout the day, participants will explore topics that are particularly relevant for building a successful academic career: developing strong manuscripts, increasing research transparency, and navigating the path towards publication in academic journals.

Welcome and Introduction

The seminar will begin with a welcome by Prof. Meike Schröder, who will introduce the objectives and agenda for the day. A short round of introductions will then give participants the opportunity to get to know each other and establish initial connections.

Scholarly Writing with Prof. Christina Raasch

The first main session will focus on academic writing. Prof. Christina Raasch from Kuehne Logistics University will provide practical guidance on how to make academic texts clearer, more compelling, and better structured.

Open Science Practices with Prof. Christian M. Ringle

In the afternoon, Prof. Christian M. Ringle from Hamburg University of Technology and James Cook University will introduce the topic of Open Science. Transparent, reproducible, and reusable research practices are becoming increasingly important across academic disciplines.

From Submission to Publication with Prof. Matthias Klumpp and Prof. Christian Thies

The final main session will focus on the academic publishing process. Prof. Matthias Klumpp from the University of Bremen and the Politecnico di Milano, together with Prof. Christian Thies from Hamburg University of Technology, will provide insights from the perspectives of authors, reviewers, and editorial board members.

Networking, Breaks and Closing

The lunch break and coffee break will provide informal opportunities for networking and exchange among participants. At the end of the seminar, Prof. Meike Schröder will summarize the main takeaways of the day and provide space for final questions and reflections.

The HICL PhD Seminar offers a compact and practice-oriented platform for doctoral researchers who want to strengthen their research skills, improve the visibility of their work, and gain valuable insights into key stages of the academic career path.
