Prof. Dr. Nima Shokri

I obtained my BSc and MSc degree in Mechanical Engineering from Sharif University of Technology and received my PhD upon the recommendation of School of Architecture, Civil and Environmental Engineering from École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne in Switzerland in 2009 followed by a postdoctoral research at Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETHZ). After my postdoctoral research, I worked as Assistant Professor (April 2010 – December 2012) at Boston University in the United States and as Lecturer (Jan 2013 – July 2016) and Senior Lecturer (August 2016 – June 2020) at The University of Manchester in the United Kingdom. In July 2020, I joined Hamburg University of Technology (TUHH) as the Chair and Professor of Geo-Hydroinformatics.

My research is dedicated to tackling global challenges concerning water, soil, and the environment. I am passionate about creating new knowledge through research and innovation, especially in the development of innovative measurement tools and predictive capabilities that harness the strengths of sensing technologies and big data analytics. Together with my team at Hamburg University of Technology, I aim to provide accurate and quantitative insights into multiscale and multiphase ecohydrological processes occurring near the Earth's surface. I integrate theoretical frameworks with state-of-the-art modeling and experimental techniques, leveraging cutting-edge tools such as artificial intelligence, computational fluid dynamics, environmental sensing technologies, thermal imaging, satellite remote sensing, big data, analytics and informatics to offer new insights and perspectives on the complex interactions between soil, water, and the atmosphere.
