BlueMat - Water-Driven Materials

BlueMat's aim is to develop nature-inspired, sustainable and interactive material systems that unfold their unique functionality in water or aqueous environments, or that derive their properties directly from nature’s most powerful resource — water.

Through the targeted use of water, materials can reversibly change their characteristics — such as storing and generating energy, adjusting light transmission and color, or altering mechanical flexibility. The research will pave the way for innovative and environmentally friendly applications.

BlueMat´s mission: If you can do it with water, do it with water.

Cluster of Excellence "BlueMat: Water-Driven Materials" Approved

A significant milestone for materials research: the new Cluster of Excellence BlueMat: Water-Driven Materials has been approved. The Hamburg University of Technology (TUHH), together with its partner institutions, has secured funding of up to 77 million euros for the next seven years. At the core of the cluster lies a revolutionary research approach: functionalizing materials through the targeted use of water.

BlueMat Scientist Prof. Jörg Weißmüller receives the Heyn Commemorative Medal

As the highest honour awarded by the German Society for Materials Science (DGM), the Heyn Commemorative Medal in Germany is also recognised internationally. It is awarded for outstanding research achievements. The award ceremony will take place in autumn 2025.
