Welcome to the Department of Marine Engineering

The Department of Marine Engineering (ASM) at Hamburg University of Technology (TUHH) was founded in September 2013 and emerged from the Ship Machinery Division of the Institute of Energy Technology. Ships are the most efficient means of transport worldwide, which is why over 90% of all goods are transported by sea today. Our goal is to use our scientific expertise to support shipping on its path to a climate-neutral future while optimizing the efficiency and operational safety of the entire “ship” system. The focus is on propulsion systems and the associated auxiliary systems.

Research focus

Our research activities are divided into three areas:

  1. At our marine engine test bench, we investigate the use of climate-neutral fuels in real engine operation and carry out operational or design variations depending on the issue at hand. We also investigate the potential in terms of operating behaviour and emissions.
  2. We operate our own laboratory for chemical and physical testing of fuels and operating materials. It is equipped with a comprehensive range of instruments that enable detailed and comprehensive analysis.
  3. We have particular expertise in the field of holistic simulations of ship propulsion systems of any complexity. With a focus on hybrid systems, new control strategies are being developed and investigated. Our spin-off ISM GmbH is also active in this area.
