mareXtreme METAscales-TUHH - Flood protection in urban, semi-urban and rural areas along estuaries
Project description
The METAscales-TUHH sub-project is part of the METAscales consortium project, which is part of the DAM research mission, 'Pathways to improved risk management for marine extreme events' (mareXtreme), under the MARE:N funding scheme (Marine and Polar Research).
The project aims to increase the resilience of coastal communities by developing and testing innovative flood protection concepts in urban, semi-urban, and rural estuarine areas.
Specifically, METAscales-TUHH is analysing the impact of hydro-meteorological extreme events on flood protection, and developing tailored measures based on this analysis. An integrated model cascade comprising hydrodynamic and hydrological modelling is being used to capture morphological developments and extreme events in estuaries.
This work is part of work package AP 4 of the overall project, which focuses on innovations in flood protection. The main areas of focus are the analysis of existing flood protection strategies, the development of new measures and their evaluation in terms of their effectiveness in future extreme situations. These measures are validated across several work packages to ensure sustainable solutions for coastal protection.
