Climate change is becoming increasingly visible through heat waves, low water levels in major European rivers, wildfires, and other extreme events around the world. Addressing these challenges requires not only scientific and technological advances, but also collaboration across disciplines.

Against this backdrop, we are pleased to announce the 5th edition of the AICC Conference – Action versus Inaction Facing Climate Change, taking place from 9–11 June 2027 at Hamburg University of Technology (TUHH).

Building on previous AICC conferences in Paris (2023), Strasbourg (2024), Lausanne (2025), and Rome (2026), the Hamburg edition will provide an expanded forum for in-depth discussion of climate change, with a particular focus on strengthening exchange between engineering and other disciplines.

Bringing disciplines together for climate action

The conference will bring together international experts from engineering, economics, sociology, geography, built environment science, and political science to exchange knowledge and develop meaningful approaches to addressing climate change.

Topics will include CO₂ management, sustainable urban planning and transportation, climate adaptation, energy systems, and innovative strategies for a greener economy.

The 2027 conference is organized by Hamburg University of Technology (TUHH), with key support from the United Nations University (UNU) Hub and the Digital City Science Chair (DCS) at HafenCity University Hamburg (HCU).

First keynote speaker announced

We are delighted to announce our first keynote speaker: Prof. Nima Shokri, Head of the Institute of Geo-Hydroinformatics at TUHH and Executive Co-Director of the United Nations University Hub on Engineering to Face Climate Change.

Call for Papers

The Call for Papers will be published in November 2026, with extended abstracts for papers and posters due in early 2027. All submissions will be reviewed by the AICC Organizing Committee.

On 6 July 2026, the UNU Hub Engineering to Face Climate Change at Hamburg University of Technology (TUHH) hosted its second Meeting of the year. Researchers, faculty members, and PhD students came together to exchange research findings, discuss ongoing projects addressing climate change and sustainable development, and strengthen interdisciplinary collaboration across the Hub.

A highlight of the event was the PhD Poster Competition, supported by the Polensky Foundation, which showcased innovative research by PhD students affiliated with the Hub. The poster session fostered lively scientific discussions among attendees. In recognition of the outstanding quality and impact of their research, First Prize (€1,000) was awarded to Inchara Kumaraswamy, Institute of Geo-Hydroinformatics for “Global Assessment of Saline Lake Dynamics”, while Second Prize (€500) was awarded to Davis Rakhshan, Smart Sensors Group for “AI-Enabled Acoustic Sensing for Scalable Biodiversity Monitoring under Climate Change”. We extend our sincere congratulations to the awardees and our special thanks to the members of the assessment committee for their time, expertise, and valuable contribution to the evaluation process. The UNU Hub Meeting once again highlighted the UNU Hub's commitment to advancing interdisciplinary research and supporting emerging scientists.

On 5–6 June 2025, the Hamburg University of Technology (TUHH) hosted the First Annual Meeting of the United Nations University (UNU) Hubs, bringing together researchers and representatives from UNU Hubs around the world.

The meeting strengthened collaboration on key topics including climate change, environmental sustainability, water resources, and development challenges in the Global South.

By fostering dialogue between academia, policymakers, and society, the event provided a valuable platform for knowledge exchange, the development of new partnerships, and the exploration of innovative solutions to pressing global challenges.
