Note:
Abstract: It has become obvious that modern ships suffer from problems related to their seakeeping-behaviour, which is mainly related to large amplitude roll motion in head and following seas. An state-of-the-art tool to address the phenomena connected to these stability accidents are numerical seakeeping simulations. The present document analyses a number of real capsizing accidents, which are related to poor stability in rough weather, showing that numerical simulations are suitable to identify safe and un-safe conditions clearly for specific ships. For this purpose various criteria as-sessing the intact stability of ships are applied, including a new one, which was developed at Ham-burg University of Technology in the recent years.
