PhD candidate Jana Ihrens and Professor Thorsten A. Kern from the Institute for Mechatronics in Mechanics have worked together with PhD candidate Kathrin Eckert and Professor Irina Smirnova from the Institute for Thermal Separation Processes at the Hamburg University of Technology on structuring of electrorheological fluids in polymer matrices for miniature actuators.

At a CRC seminar at TUHH, Professor Freund and Dr.-Ing. Börnhorst gave inspiring talks on "Intelligent Design of Structured Catalysts for Flexible, Safe and Efficient Reactor Operation" and "Multiphase Reactors in Emission Control", introducing the audience to intelligent structures that could be used for SMART reactors.

PhD candidate Christian Weiland and Professor Michael Schlüter from the Institute of Multiphase Flows Flows at the Hamburg University of Technology together with Professor Alexandra von Kameke from the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Production Management at the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences have presented their latest results on trajectory-based breakup modelling for dense bubbly flows.

Dr. Miriam Edel from the Institute of Technical Microbiology at TUHH have worked together with Dr. Johannes Eberhard Reiner from Novo Nordisk Foundation CO₂ Research Center (CORC) and Dr. Benjamin Korth from Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ) on oxic microbial electrosynthesis as an potential alternative for biomass production.

On the 5th and 6th of September, the 1st Summer School of the CRC 1615 SMART Reactors took place, focusing on the design of chemical reactors and bioreactors.

Three presentations were given by Yan Jin, Christian Weiland, and Michael Schlüter from the Institute of Multiphase Flows during the 27th International Congress of Chemical and Process Engineering in Prague, Czech Republic. For his talk, Christian Weiland was awarded with the Best Lecture Award 2024 of the ECFE Working Party on Multiphase Flow!
