2nd Summer School of the CRC 1615 SMART Reactors

On the 27th and 28th of August, the 2nd Summer School of the CRC 1615 took place at the TUHH, focusing on the Imaging and Characterization of SMART Reactors.

Day One began with presentations on optical measurements in fluid dynamics by Alexandra von Kameke (Hamburg University of Applied Sciences) and MRI techniques in multiphase flows by Alexander Penn (Hamburg University of Technology). After a coffee break featuring the local specialty “Franzbrötchen,” Tobias Knopp (TUHH and UKE Hamburg) introduced magneto-mechanical resonators as a new passive tracking and sensing platform and Carina Hedrich from the Electron Microscopy Unit (BEEM) at TUHH presented on materials characterization by electron microscopy.

Participants also engaged in a poster session and a practical LabXperience, visiting laboratories of the BEEM, the Institute of Multiphase Flows, the Institute of Process Imaging, and the Institute of Technical Biocatalysis. The first day concluded with a group climbing activity and a dinner, fostering networking and collaboration in an informal setting.

Day Two started with presentations on supporting research through the technology platform light microscopy at University of Hamburg by Roland Thuenauer, and insights into the TUHH central laboratory for chemical analysis by Anna-Lena Schulze and Bo-Magnus Elfers. Victoria Bueschler and Daniel Ohde (TUHH) discussed conventional quantitative analysis methods for (bio)chemical processes. The afternoon included a keynote on synchrotron X-ray imaging of materials by Silja Flenner from Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon at DESY Hamburg.

Overall, the programme effectively combined lectures, hands-on laboratory experiences, and social activities to deepen scientific understanding, promote interdisciplinary collaboration, and strengthen the research community within and beyond the CRC.

A huge thank you to all the speakers and to Alexandra von Lameke and Alexander Penn for the great organisation!
