Prof. Giorgio Besagni from Politecnico di Milano visits the CRC "SMART Reactors"

The guest from Milano/Italy gave an outstanding talk on "Bubble column fluid dynamics: a multi-scale perspective towards smart bubble column reactors" at the CRC seminar.

This week we had the pleasure of hosting Prof. Giorgio Besagni, an international expert on experimental and numerical analysis of multiphase flows from the Politecnico di Milano at our CRC in Hamburg.

In his seminar, Prof. Besagni addressed the complex dynamics that occur when gas is introduced into a liquid medium, creating challenges in the design and operation of multiphase reactors. He provided a comprehensive analysis of the complex interactions at various scales - from individual bubbles to the entire reactor. A new theory was proposed based on a comprehensive data set collected over the last few years of research. This theory redefines the current approach to bubble columns and is based on the following premise: the fluid dynamics in gas-liquid bubble columns can be interpreted through a general relationship, based on five flow regime transitions, between two global fluid dynamic parameters. Based on this theory, novel and intelligent reactors can be designed to control the flow regimes.
