Abstract: Major ports are complex systems consisting of multiple container terminals, logistics facilities, transhipment terminals and empty container depots. Port-internal traffic between those facilities is mostly carried out by truck, which often leads to congestion and entails huge environmental impacts. One approach to minimize those effects are highly integrated inter terminal transport (ITT-)systems, which e. g. bundle or relocate freight to different transport modes, use eco-friendly transport vehicles or harmonise freight flows. This study compares ITT-layouts by applying discrete event simulation. Initially, a spatial analysis was conducted to determine expedient ITT-layouts. Using Tecnomatix Plant Simulation, both layouts were analysed and compared in terms of system throughput, traffic volume, number of vehicles, vehicle utilization, traffic distribution, amount of transhipment moves and lead times. Expert estimations, public company information as well as satellite and empirical traffic data were used to derive, calibrate and compare the simulation models. The study shows that Tecnomatix Plant Simulation is suitable to conduct a comparative analysis of complex ITT-layouts. The obtained data allows particular conclusions about the strengths and weaknesses of layouts in their respective application. However, further detailing should be applied in future research
