Institute for Industrialization of Smart Materials (M-27)

The Institute for Industrialisation of Smart Materials (ISM) focuses on the research and development of ‘smart’ materials and their integration into industrial products. Such materials are used in particular for adaptive, self-regulating system components, which can be produced using, amongst other methods, additive manufacturing (AM). The head of the institute, Professor Kelbassa, is also the director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Additive Production Technologies (IAPT) in Hamburg-Bergedorf. Other key research areas include, for example, the integration of functions and sensors using AM.
