Cross-cutting topics and methods

Introduction

The IPMT deals with the optimisation and development of machining processes. The focus is on integrating state-of-the-art technologies and methods in order to continuously increase the efficiency and quality of manufacturing. This includes the development of specific tools, the intelligent use of process data, and the use of experiments and simulations for process analysis and optimisation.

Tool and process development

The development and optimisation of tools and processes is a central component of the research work at IPMT. Innovative approaches are pursued to increase the performance of machining processes while simultaneously extending the service life of the tools. To this end, material properties, coatings and geometries are investigated to ensure optimal interaction between the tool and the workpiece. Another focus is on adapting and developing new processes for specific machining tasks in order to achieve maximum precision and efficiency. Particular attention is paid to the development of tools and processes for machining difficult-to-cut materials (CFRP, titanium) and complex geometries.

Utilisation of digital data

Digitalisation offers enormous potential for increasing efficiency and improving quality in the field of machining. At IPMT, research is being conducted into how data from the manufacturing process can be systematically collected, analysed and used for process optimisation. This includes the implementation of sensor technology for real-time monitoring of process parameters, the development of algorithms for data analysis, the use of machine learning and the integration of data into digital twins of manufacturing systems. The goal is to gain comprehensive process knowledge through the intelligent linking and evaluation of data. This makes it possible to detect processing errors at an early stage, avoid process disruptions and continuously improve product quality.

Experiments & Simulations

Experimental investigations and simulations are indispensable tools at IPMT for researching and validating machining processes. Targeted experiments enable real process conditions to be reproduced and the effects of various parameters on machining quality and efficiency to be analysed in detail. This includes testing new tools, validating process strategies and investigating dynamic effects such as vibrations and chatter. In addition, numerical simulations are used to model complex physical phenomena in the machining process and make predictions about process behaviour. The combination of experimental data and simulation results leads to a comprehensive understanding of machining processes and enables the development of robust and efficient manufacturing solutions.
