I³-Labs: Smart Reactors - Smart Reactors

Objective

The scientific goal of the I3-Lab is the scientific design of "smart reactors", which enable significantly larger yields of chemical and biochemical reactions through an optimal reaction environment.

This is possible through the geometrically induced adaptation of the transport and reaction processes on all size scales. Both, the molecular diffusion from and to the bio- or chemocatalytically active surface (hierarchically structured catalysts) and the mass transfer through boundary layers as well as the mixing and separation of products and by-products shall be influenced within the reactor by the knowledge-based structuring in such a way that a massive increase of product quality and resource efficiency is possible. The resulting highly complex geometry and material variety can only only be achieved using new additive manufacturing technologies.
