Bringing Spectrum Sensing to the Masses by Samir Das

Place: E1.022 at 14:00 Abstract: With the explosion of mobile data, there is a growing realization that RF spectrum must be treated as an important resource that is in limited supply. Policy makers and researchers alike are promoting various forms of spectrum sharing models to improve spectrum utilization. Just like any other resource with mismatched demand and supply, all steps towards better utilization have also increased the need for large scale spectrum monitoring. We envision a future when large-scale spectrum monitoring will form an entire ecosystem of spectrum data, spectrum analytics and perhaps enable spectrum-aware apps. We are developing an end-to-end platform called SpecSense to support this vision. SpecSense (i) crowdsources spectrum monitoring to low-cost, low-power commodity SDR/embedded platforms, and (ii) provides cloud-based spectrum database and API support for spectrum analytics. In this talk I will describe the SpecSense vision and address a set of specific analytical and systems challenges in its design and operation. About the speaker: Samir R. Das is a Professor and Interim Chair of the Department of Computer Science Department at Stony Brook University, State University of New York (SUNY). His research interests are in wireless networking and mobile computing, focusing on protocols, systems and performance evaluation. In the past, he received the U.S. National Science Foundation’s CAREER award. He also co-chaired the technical program committees of premier mobile networking conferences such as ACM MobiHoc and ACM MobiCom. He also served on the editorial boards of major networking journals, including IEEE/ACM Transactions on Networking, IEEE Transactions on Mobile Computing, ACM/Springer Wireless Networks Journal and Ad Hoc Networks journal. More information about him and his research can be found at http://www.cs.stonybrook.edu/~samir.
