Embedded Systems Week 2023 welcomed more than 360 attendees on TUHH Campus

From Sep 14 -22, the worldwide top in embedded systems research convened in Hamburg. Organized by Prof. Falk, a technical program of unprecedented breadth was presented in a lively and interactive atmosphere.

Embedded Systems Week (ESWEEK) is the premier event covering all aspects of embedded systems and software. By bringing together three leading conferences (CASES, CODES+ISSS, and EMSOFT), two symposia (MEMOCODE and NOCS), three hot-topic workshops, four special sessions, six tutorials, thirteen education classes, three software competitions with demos, and a special program on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, ESWEEK presents attendees a wide range of choices unveiling state of the art embedded systems design and hardware/software architectures. Besides, ESWEEK 2023 featured a special day program on the topic of semiconductor renaissance and its impact on embedded systems design.

The technical program of the three conferences CASES, CODES+ISSS and EMSOFT consisted of 20 regular sessions and 2 special sessions. A strong emphasis on interaction was ensured thanks to poster presentations for each paper, during which the participants engaged in vivid discussions with the authors.

This year's ESWEEK special day targeted the global semiconductor renaissance and focused on the one hand on Green IoT and Green ICT for the Green Transition, and on the other hand on Machine Learning for Embedded System Design. Two panel discussions were integrated into the technical program: An Industry Panel dedicated to the links between the semiconductor industry and embedded computing, and an Education Panel exploring the links between computer engineering education, embedded computing, and the semiconductor renaissance.

Further highlights of the ESWEEK program were three keynote talks by distinguished leaders in academia and industry. Prof. Sarita Adve (University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign) gave a talk on the era of immersive computing and how it will shape the research agenda for embedded systems. Dr. Heike Riel, IBM fellow from IBM Research Europe in Zurich, shared her ideas on how to scale quantum computing with the ESWEEK community. Last but not least, Prof. Lothar Thiele, from ETH Zurich, talked on resilient embedded systems in the era of machine learning.

This core ESWEEK program was completed with various additional exciting events like, e.g., tutorials providing in-depth knowledge in new trends and hot topics, renowned symposia addressing formal methods and models for system design (MEMOCODE) and networks on chips (NOCS), or a Test of Time Award ceremony honoring the authors of articles published in previous ESWEEK editions, and having the highest impact.

ESWEEK 2023 at Hamburg University of Technology (TUHH) successfully bridged the gap between leading-edge academic research and industrial uptake, not least by means of the combined PhD forum and the Recruitment Event where young talents had the chance to meet recruiters from ESWEEK's industrial sponsors coming from global players like, e.g., NXP Semiconductors, AMD, Huawei, Siemens, Synopsys, or Bosch.
