His project thesis at the Institute of Polymers and Composites focuses on the process chain of Tailored Fiber Placement, from design and manufacturing to mechanical testing.
Tailored Fiber Placement (TFP) is a technical embroidery process in which reinforcing fibers are fixed to a base material using yarn. In addition to the advantage of producing near net shape and load oriented preforms, this process offers further, as yet largely untapped, possibilities for a circular economy in the field of fiber-reinforced plastics.
The goal of Simon’s project thesis is to gain a scientific understanding of the findings and process-related details, and to prepare them in such a way that they can be used for academic education and integrated into future teaching formats from the Institute of Polymers and Composites of the Hamburg University of Technology. This provides students a practical insight into modern, resource-efficient composite material technologies.
By connecting to the CampusLab Circular Economy, the project also builds a bridge towards sustainable material cycles and future-proof lightweight construction solutions.
