Doctoral Project Aims to Transfrom Marine Research: Launch of the Europe Initiative NOESIS!

How can undersea earthquakes be predicted in time, how can coastlines be protected more sustainably or how can mussel beds be preserved more effectively?
The primary goal of the new EU-funded project NOESIS (Network for Oceanic Sensing and Integrated Science) is to fundamentally modernize the way the world’s oceans are monitored, understood, and managed.

Through an interdisciplinary approach, NOESIS combines technological innovation with extensive expertise and infrastructure in ocean observation. In doing so, the project enables a shift from passive, retrospective collection of marine data toward autonomous, real-time ocean observation and analysis - “𝗢𝗰𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲”

Starting in October 2026 under the lead of the University of Helsinki, a total of 15 doctoral positions (PhD positions) will be advertised and filled across Europe with a funding budget of €4.5 million.

Represented by the Institute of Institute for Networked Cyber-Physical Systems (Prof. Olaf Landsiedel) and the Institute for Autonomous Cyber-Physical Systems (Prof. Bernd-Christian Renner), the TUHH will host two closely collaborating PhD positions:
• 𝗔𝗜 & 𝗘𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗱𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝗦𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀: Investigating distributed, embedded AI for real-time multisensor analysis underwater.
• 𝗨𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Fundamental research on low-power integrated acoustic sensing and underwater communication using AI-based event detection.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗠𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻: Training a new generation of researchers who bridge the gap between technological innovation (hardware & AI) and ecological expertise to make the "digital ocean" a reality.

Exciting times ahead! Stay tuned for more updates on the project.
