Research at the Institute of Continuum and Materials Mechanics
We work on a large varitey of projects on the areas of solid mechanics, computer simulation and materials modeling. Thereby we focus in particular on the following three questions:
Multi-scale simulations
How can the properties of materials be understood and predicted by means of computer simulations on different length scales?
Multiphysics simulations
How to simulate systems where different physical phenomena such as solid mechanics, fluid mechanics or electrostatics occur together and interact with each other?
Machine learning and data-driven methods
How can we use large amounts of data for fast and reliable predictions in case where the underlying physical phenomena remain poorly understood or where computer simulation of these phenomena with classical methods would be prohibitively expensive?
The applications of our research range from classical mechanical, civil, environmental and aerospace engineering to biomechanics and medicine.
