ELLIS Unit Hamburg joins the European ELLIS network

On 29 October 2026, the ELLIS Unit Hamburg was admitted to the European Laboratory for Learning and Intelligent Systems (ELLIS), with Prof. Dr. Nihat Ay as one of its two directors.

The unit brings together five Hamburg institutions: Universität Hamburg (UHH), Hamburg University of Technology (TUHH), Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron DESY, University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE) and Helmut Schmidt University/University of the Federal Armed Forces Hamburg (HSU/UniBw H). ELLIS was founded in 2018 as a pan-European network that supports fundamental research in machine learning. With Hamburg and the new units Côte d’Azur, Innsbruck, Ireland and Norway, it now comprises 49 units. The Hamburg unit’s research profile covers five areas: foundations of machine learning, cognitive and cyber-physical systems, climate research, physics and biomedical sciences.

Nihat, head of the Institute for Data Science Foundations, shares the scientific leadership of the unit with Prof. Dr. Stefano Panzeri, head of the Institute for Neural Information Processing at UKE. Dr. Katrin Schöning-Stierand of the Hub of Computing and Data Science (HCDS) at UHH coordinates the unit. The scientific team comprises 13 principal investigators from the five partner institutions. TUHH is represented by Nihat and Prof. Dr. Annika Eichler, who is also affiliated with DESY. The unit builds on the collaboration established through the “Computing and Data Science” action area of PIER PLUS. Through the ELLIS network, its researchers gain access to international collaborations, thematic research programmes and funding schemes for doctoral candidates and postdocs.

At TUHH, fundamental research on machine learning for engineering is a focus of the “Machine Learning in Engineering” initiative. “The ELLIS Unit Hamburg offers excellent opportunities to further expand these research activities and strengthen networking and collaboration – both with the partners of the ELLIS Unit Hamburg and with other ELLIS units across Europe,” says Nihat.
