Welcome, Mikhail!

We are pleased that Prof. Mikhail Prokopenko from the University of Sydney will be our guest for one month.

Prof. Mikhail Prokopenko is the director of the Centre for Complex Systems at the University of Sydney. He also leads the Modelling and Simulation research group in the School of Computer Science, and is a member of leadership team for the Pathogen Emergence and Spread Theme at the Sydney Institute for Infectious Diseases.  Mikhail holds PhD in Computer Science (Australia), MA in Economics (USA), and MSc in Applied Mathematics (USSR). His research is focused on quantitative analysis of collective behaviour, self-organisation and critical phenomena, as well as modelling and simulation of complex systems.

 

Mikhail’s cross-disciplinary work in information theory, computational epidemiology and artificial intelligence has been applied to pandemic and crisis modelling, systems biology, urban modelling, anomaly detection, robotic soccer, and other diverse areas.  Over the course of his career, Mikhail has published more than 230 publications and patents, including over 110 journal articles. His work has been cited over 10,300 times to date, resulting in an h-index of 50; his articles on average receive over 41 citations.

 

Mikhail has chaired numerous international Program Committees, and is a Fellow of The Royal Society of NSW and a Senior Member of IEEE. He is a founding member of Steering Committee of The International Association for Guided Self-Organisation. He has served on the Editorial Boards of PLOS Complex Systems, Scientific Data and Entropy journals, and Encyclopedia of Machine Learning and Data Mining. Mikhail actively participated in RoboCup – the biggest robotics and artificial intelligence competition in the world – and won two world championships in RoboCup-2016 and 2019 (2D Soccer Simulation League). 

 

In April 2020, Prof Prokopenko contributed to the “Roadmap to Recovery” report to the Australian Federal Government, prepared by the Group of 8 Australian universities. His research on modelling COVID-19 in Australia is listed in Nature’s Top 50 SARS-CoV-2 articles from 2020, with several findings quantifying the effects of non-pharmaceutical interventions on controlling the COVID-19 pandemic having been adopted by the World Health Organization.

 

At TUHH, Prof Prokopenko will collaborate with Prof. Dr. Nihat Ay, the head of the Institute, continuing their long-term research on guided self-organisation. The plan is to analyse the thermodynamic efficiency of interactions in self-organising systems, interpreted information-geometrically, with a view to make the approach applicable to a broader range of complex systems.
