Seminar: Causality and AI for Cyber-Physical Systems

On May 28, 2025. Oliver Niggemann, Helmut Schmidt University

We are pleased to announce an upcoming talk by Prof. Oliver Niggemann from Helmut Schmidt University, who will be presenting on May 28, 2025, at 15:00.

Abstract:

As cyber-physical systems (CPS) grow increasingly complex, understanding and managing the interplay between their components becomes critical. Causality, the principle that actions lead to outcomes, is central to this understanding. In CPS, causal relations are often known and engineered, making them fundamentally different from domains where causality must be inferred. This talk explores how explicit causal reasoning can enhance key automation tasks such as production planning, fault diagnosis, and system adaptation. By integrating causal models into AI, we can build systems that are more robust, interpretable, and transferable across contexts. Recognizing and leveraging causality enables AI to move from reactive data fitting to proactive reasoning, a shift that is essential for the next generation of intelligent technical systems
