DVGW Research Centre TUHH

The DVGW Research Centre at the Hamburg University of Technology (TUHH) is a recognised centre of excellence for water research, drinking water treatment and water supply. It is part of the Institute for Water Resources and Water Supply and carries out application-oriented research into current issues relating to water abstraction, water treatment and drinking water distribution.

The research centre focuses on the development and optimisation of drinking water treatment processes, the assessment of raw water resources and ensuring a sustainable water supply. It combines scientific methods with engineering solutions to provide practical results for the water sector.

Key research areas

Research activities cover a broad spectrum of current topics in water research:

• Raw water analysis and water quality
  Studies on the characterisation and assessment of natural water resources.
   
• Treatment technologies and membrane processes
  Development of efficient processes for the removal of trace substances, microplastics and pathogenic microorganisms.
   
• Distribution systems and network management
  Research into ensuring drinking water quality in the distribution network and into innovative approaches to network operation.
   
• Sustainability and resource conservation
  Concepts for energy-efficient processes and the sustainable use of water resources, taking climate change into account.

Collaborations and practical relevance

The DVGW Research Centre at TUHH works in close collaboration with water supply companies, public authorities, engineering firms and research institutions.

As an institution recognised by the German Technical and Scientific Association for Gas and Water (DVGW), it forms an important interface between fundamental research and practical application in the water sector.

Through interdisciplinary projects, funded by the DVGW, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and state authorities, amongst others, the Research Centre contributes to the development of sustainable solutions for drinking water supply in northern Germany and beyond.

Objectives and Mission Statement

The objectives of the DVGW Research Centre are to promote the transfer of knowledge and technology between academia and industry, thereby ensuring the long-term security of supply, quality and sustainability of drinking water.

Through its research, it contributes to the innovative capacity of the water sector and to the training of the next generation of scientists at the Technical University of Hamburg.
