Curriculum Vitae
Dr. Rutner received his Engineering Diploma (Dipl.-Ing.) and Doctorate (Dr.-Ing.) from the Technical University Munich in 1999 and 2003, respectively, spent two years as Monbusho Scholar at the Osaka Institute of Technology/Japan (2000-2002) and spent his postdoc as German Research Foundation (DFG) Scholar at University of California, Berkeley (2005-2007). Dr. Rutner finished his Habilitation at Technical University Munich in 2012.

Dr. Rutner worked as Consulting Engineer at Prof. Albrecht Engineering Consultants, Munich from 2003 to 204, and at the Applied Science Department, Weidlinger Associates, Inc., New York from 2007 to 2013. He was involved in the proof design of the steel roof construction of the Allianz Arena, Munich, and in the design and vulnerability assessment and blast protection of the PATH Station and World Trade Center Transportation Hub (Oculus), New York City. Dr. Rutner was PI and Co-PI on several Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR/STTR) grants awarded by the US Navy and the US Air Force.

Dr. Rutner was appointed Associate Professor at Stevens Institute of Technology, USA, in 2013. At Stevens, Dr. Rutner was involved in metal and composite research, particularly in damage precursor sensing and metal joining. Together with two colleagues, Profs. Hassiotis and Donskoy, Dr. Rutner was recipient of a major research grant from the US Department of Transportation to explore damage precursor sensing of metals.

In 2017, Dr. Rutner was appointed Professor and Institute Director of the Institute for Metal and Composite Structures at Hamburg University of Technology (TUHH) and started in this position on September 1, 2017. Since January 2021 Prof. Rutner serves as Dean of the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department at TUHH.
