Continuous Liquid Hot Water Hydrolysis as a Sustainable Extraction Strategy for β-Glucans from different industrial residues.

This research aims to develop a continuous liquid hot water (LHW) hydrolysis process for the efficient, reproducible, and scalable extraction of β-glucans from diverse industrial biomass residues. Precise control of temperature, pressure, and residence time in continuous operation is used to overcome key limitations of conventional batch extraction, such as broad residence time distributions, long processing times, and inconsistent molecular weight profiles. The chemical free nature of LHW enables selective hydrolysis and improved extractability of β-glucans while minimizing chemical consumption and environmental impact. Reaction severity is systematically evaluated to elucidate its influence on β-glucan yield, structural integrity, and degradation, enabling the identification of optimal operating windows. The establishment of stable continuous operation and reproducible production of β-glucan-rich hydrolysates provides a robust foundation for future scale-up and integration into biorefinery concepts.
