Univ.-Prof. Dr.-Ing. Nikola Bursac, born in 1986, has been the Institute Director of ISEM - Institute for Smart Development and Machine Elements at the Hamburg University of Technology (TUHH) since October 2022.  

Nikola Bursac studied mechanical engineering at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and received his PhD in 2016 at IPEK - Institute for Product Development. There, he was most recently responsible for the department of development methodology and management as well as CAE and optimization. In doing so, he researched product generation development and agile development of complex technical systems. In teaching, he introduced problem-based learning in site-distributed development teams.   

In 2018, he built a Scrum Master team as an Agile coach at the high-tech company TRUMPF Werkzeugmaschinen GmbH + Co. KG. He then took on responsibility as a development project manager for an automation modular system. At the same time, he conducted research as part of the BMBF project MoSyS - Human-oriented Design of Complex System of Systems. Most recently, he was responsible as Agile Manager for the area of Model Based Design for approx. 25 employees as well as the processes of virtual product development at TRUMPF.  


In both 2018 and 2022, Univ. Prof. Dr.-Ing. Nikola Bursac was honored with the Hector Teaching Award, an award by the Hector School for Engineering and Management at KIT.
In 2017, he was awarded the Pahl-Beitz Prize, a Scientific Award by the Scientific Society for Product Development (WiGeP).
