In recent years, IT has become increasingly important in companies in order to simplify and accelerate business processes without having to invest heavily in IT infrastructure. As cloud computing and cloud solutions as a service have become more widespread, many companies are now looking at how they want to adopt cloud and corresponding service offerings into their business. In the meantime, many new Cloud Service Provider emerge or classical Outsourcing Hoster are changing their business models to adopt cloud service offerings into their portfolio. Due to the fast pace nature of change to adopt new technologies, on the one hand many service providers struggle to define a clear service portfolio and offerings to their end-customer. On the other hand, many companies struggle to stay up to date. As a result a number of challenges arise related to cost monitoring, transparency, compliance, integration of other technologies (e.g. AI, deep learning) etc.
Cloud computing refers to the provision and use of IT infrastructure such as storage space, computing power or software via the Internet. The idea behind this is to make these IT infrastructures available via a computer network so that they do not have to be installed on local computers. The provision and use of the relevant IT services takes place through technical interfaces and protocols as well as client software. This enables users to access data from any location and to collaborate with colleagues and/or partners without limits.
The decision making process is often influenced by various factors and often driven by costs.
- There are multiple cloud solution offerings from different cloud vendors on the market.
- The IT and procurement department need to make strategic decisions based on the overall costs to adopt cloud services which is difficult to determine for end-customers.
- Small and medium sized companies often lack the knowledge to adopt cloud services effectively.
- End-customers do fear lock-in effects and hence are utilizing a hybrid cloud approach, which increases complexity for monitoring costs and service utilization.
- Cloud service providers are required to comply with licensing terms of different vendors and meet the end-customers' requirements.
- No clear monitoring of cloud usage is present making the calculation of running costs imprecise.
- Cloud service providers struggle to provide transparency on liability.
Aims of the project
The goal is to determine and document the requirements to become a Cloud Solution Provider for Azure / AWS / Google cloud offerings and to highlight the strength and weakness of each cloud solution to create a decision model for providers to develop their service offerings for small and medium sized end-customers.
