Airbus Operations GmbH

Sustainable Torsion Box Rib Concept Competition

Description of the company
Airbus is an international pioneer in the aerospace industry. We are a leader in designing, manufacturing and delivering aerospace products, services and solutions to customers on a global scale. We aim for a better-connected, safer and more prosperous world.

Initial situation
Different torsion boxes are developed with different rib design solutions.

Problem
Set up a parameter study for different torsion box rib structural concepts, supported by Finite Element Analysis.

Aims of the project
Find the most promising concept, structurally optimised for different geometric and loading conditions under weight, cost, industrial and eco-design aspects along the complete life cycle of the product.

Scopes

Design part:

  • Compare and assess different rib designs
  • Create rating matrix considering weight, cost, industrial, eco-design, life-cycle

Calculation part:

  • FEM setup (generic boundary conditions for quick start will be given)
  • FEM properties, loads and validation
  • Rib concept proposals (From Airbus: Framework, Bead rib, Stiffeners and Holes) (From Students: to be discussed)
  • Modelling + First run (Design goal: Buckling onset, max shear strain, edge strain)
  • Optimization of rib concept under given design goal
  • Comparison per box size (weight, cost, eco-friendliness, …)

Target group (students)
Bau- und Umweltingenieurwesen, Computer Science, Maschinenbau, Verfahrenstechnik, Wirtschaftsingenieurwesen, Theoretischer Maschinenbau, Flugzeug-Systemtechnik Environmental Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Management
