Statutes for the granting of the academic title of "Professor"
at Hamburg University of Technology

These statutes apply equally to men and women. Only for reasons of linguistic simplification and better readability the masculine form is used in the following.

§ 1 Application, right of recommendation

The application for granting the academic title of "Professor" pursuant to § 17 section 1 HmbHG shall be submitted by the Academic Senate to the President of the Hamburg University of Technology on the proposal of

  • a research focus,
  • a study area or
  • three members of the Academic Senate.

§ 2 Committee

(1) Proposals shall be submitted to the Academic Senate via a committee consisting of four members from the group of university teachers, two members from the group of academic staff, one student member and one member of the technical, library and administrative staff.


(2) The committee examines the proposals and submits them to the Academic Senate with a proposed resolution. It obtains the opinions of the responsible department and the research focus closest to the academic subject area of the proposed candidate on submitted proposals. It may also obtain opinions from several research priorities or study areas as well as expert reports from third parties.
 

§ 3 Procedures in the study areas and research focuses
 

(1) The relevant study area and the research focus closest to the academic field of the proposed candidate shall comment on the candidate's qualification within the scope of their competence; decisions shall be taken by a majority of the valid votes cast.

(2) The proposals or the opinions of the study area and the research focus shall be justified, with notification of the result of the vote. Expert reports obtained and any minority votes shall be attached.

§ 4 Precondition of the application

The award of the academic title of "professor" may be applied for by persons who have distinguished themselves by

(1) a) outstanding scientific achievements that match those of a university lecturer at the Hamburg University of Technology or

     b) by extraordinary achievements in the application or development of scientific knowledge and methods in the field represented by them in teaching

(2) who have been teaching at the Hamburg University of Technology for at least two years in the amount of two semester hours per week and can provide evidence of a total of five years of independent subject-related teaching activity at a recognized scientific university.

§ 5 Rights and obligations

(1) The professor is a member of the Hamburg University of Technology. He is assigned to the group of university lecturers.

(2) The award confers the right to use the academic title "Professor". It may be continued after leaving the Hamburg University of Technology as long as the award has not been revoked in accordance with § 6.

(3) The professor has the right to announce lectures as well as other courses within the scope of the available resources in his scientific field of work after consultation with the responsible department of studies. He/she is obliged to regularly offer courses amounting to at least two lecture hours per semester within the framework of the course programme of the Hamburg University of Technology and to participate in examinations. This obligation ends at the end of the semester in which the 65th year of age is reached.

§ 6 Revocation, abandonment

(1) The Academic Senate may, after hearing the relevant department and the research focus closest to the professor's subject area, request the revocation of the award of the academic title of "professor" if the professor

  1. fails to fulfil his/her teaching or examination obligations pursuant to § 5 section 3 without a justifiable reason
    or
  2. by his or her conduct proves unworthy of the position as a member of the group of university teachers.

(2) The professor may renounce the conferred title of "professor" by written notification.

§ 7 Entry into force

This Statute shall enter into force upon its publication in the Hamburg University of Technology. At the same time, the Statutes of the Hamburg University of Technology for the conferral of the academic title of "Professor" in the version of 30 October 2002 shall cease to apply. However, professors who were awarded the academic title of professor before the entry into force of the present statutes shall continue to be subject to the regulations on the scope of teaching duties applicable up to that time.
