Clusters of Excellence BlueMat: Water-Driven Materials🔗

BlueMat aims to develop a new class of sustainable, architected materials whose functionality arises from interactions between structured solid matter and water. Inspired by natural phenomena such as water-driven actuation, capillary transport, humidity-responsive coloration, and photocatalytic water splitting, the project will also explore applications beyond those found in nature, including wave control, tunable thermal emission, and energy storage and generation.

BlueMat combines experiments, imaging, and modeling across scales, from atomic interactions to device performance, while integrating top-down and bottom-up fabrication approaches to enable scalable production. Potential applications include energy-efficient windows, hydrovoltaic power generation, and technologies that harvest energy from environmental processes or waste heat.
