Implementation of a Leading Edge Suction Force Correction

Motivation and Outline

Boundary element methods are able to reliably predict propeller open water characteristics. This works very well for moderate advance coefficients. For small advance coefficients (i.e. high angles of attack) certain effects occur, which are not captured by the underlying theory of inviscid fluids. Nevertheless, they are important for the correct prediction of open water characteristics. One of these important effects is the generation of a vortex in the vicinity of the leading edge. This effect occurs due to the detachment of the flow and influences directly the pressure distribution on the blade.

Apart from the difficult direct modelling of the leading edge vortex an alternativ concept is mentioned in literature: the leading edge suction force analogy. A quite simple correction procedure can be derived from this experimentally confirmed observation.

In the present project the above mentioned approach shall be implemented in our code and an extensive test programme shall be carried out.

Requirements

Knowledge in hydrodynamics and CFD as well as coding experiences (C, C++ and Perl or Python).
