Nowadays, with dramatic increasing of global energy demand along with progressively decreasing of raw materials, substitution of fossil fuels through CO2-neutral energy derived from biogas have to become one of the main priorities worldwide. However, one of the biggest problems towards process optimization is still a lack of real-time assessment method which can quantitatively and qualitatively provide information on the process stability. In contrast to traditional laboratory analyses, NIRS (Near-infrared spectroscopy) can be used to predict operational parameters as at- and online control strategy in a fast, low-cost and non-destructive manner. 

Therefore, development of alternative techniques for determination of Dry Matter (DM), Volatile Solids (VS), FOS/TAC (Volatile Organic Acids/Total Inorganic Carbonate), Total Nitrogen (TN), Total Organic Carbon (TOC), Hydrocarbonate (HCO3-), Ammonium (NH4-N) and Volatile Fatty Acids (VFA) in the express, dynamic and at the same time reliable monitoring of the fermentation process is a focus of IUE.
