Our institute has set itself the goal of promoting open science in the research community and tries to do this by taking into account the entire scientific process:
- Development of open source software
- Development of open specifications for data exchange
- Publication and documentation of MPI measurement data
- Open access publishing of our scientific findings
A major motivation for opening up program source code, research data and data specifications is that other researchers and developers can use these projects. This allows independent evaluation and verification of research results. Furthermore, the early exchange of concepts and executable program packages ensures an early use of novel algorithms and facilitates a potential improvement by other research groups. Methods can either be used directly without having to be reimplemented, or they can serve as reference implementations.
