Within the framework of the „SAFUEL“-project, a deeper understanding of the fundamental physical processes behind the ice formation in fuel systems shall be gained: The formation of ice in aircraft fuel systems has been an important issue within the aerospace industry for decades: Fuels used in jet aircraft usually contain small quantities of water, which, below saturation limit, is present in dissolved form. When the fuel is cooled (such as during flight) the saturation limit decreases and any excess dissolved water will be precipitated. At temperatures below the freezing point this water can freeze and cause icing within the aircraft fuel system, which may affect the transport of the fuel. This phenomenon of ice formation is still not fully understood.
