Experimental and Theoretical Investigations to Roll Damping

Aim of the project is the development of more exact simulation procedures to predict the motions of modern ships under consideration of great roll amplitudes. This will be reached by a better prognosis of the roll damping of present ship sections. The new simulation procedures shall be usable without model test results. So they are applicable in the design process of ships. The contribution of the SVA Potsdam is the line development of 5 basis ships and several shape variants for numerical simulations, the preparation of a testing facility to create forced roll motions, the accomplishment of resistance and propulsion tests, the development of an active rudder control to reduce the roll motions and the experimental investigation of forced roll motions on a ship in calm water for several speeds with involvement of PIV measurements. The delivery of time functions by SVA Potsdam is the basis for validation of the numerical investigations.
