Abstract: Computer aided simulation has proved its applicability in various fields of research. It became as important as mathematical modeling, empirical studies and experiments. This is especially valid for the field of telecommunication research and development. Fourth generation (4G) mobile radio systems had to prove their performance within the IMT-Advanced (IMT-A) evaluation process issued by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). All key performance indicators concerning user data transmission had to be evaluated by system level simulation. This includes the cell spectral efficiency, cell edge user spectral efficiency and Voice over IP (VoIP) capacity. The Open Source Wireless Network Simulator (openWNS) was used within the IMT-A evaluation process to assess the performance of Long Term Evolution Advanced (LTE-A), standardized by the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP). Besides that it helped to assess and improve the performance of many other radio communication systems including IEEE 802.11 (WiFi) and IEEE 802.16 (WiMAX). This paper gives a short overview of the openWNS with focus on its barely known capabilities regarding queuing system simulation.
