Advances in Information Systems (O5)

Purpose

This module gives the student an introduction to advances and trends in information systems.
More specifically, this module covers the state of the art in aspects such as big data, cloud computing and sociotechnical systems.

Prerequisites

To follow the introductory level no previous knowledge in the field is needed. To follow the module at basic or advanced levels, basic knowledge in structure and usage of computer systems are needed.

Learning objectives

Students who complete the module at the introductory level will have an overview of the field of new trends in computer systems and their impact.
Students who complete the module at the basic level will additionally obtain:

  • Knowledge of issues, architecture, technologies and impact concerning big data
  • Knowledge of issues, architecture, technologies and impact concerning cloud computing
  • Knowledge of issues, technologies and impact concerning usability and sociotechnical systems
  • Knowledge of how to apply the taught concepts for solving real life problems.

Students who complete the module at the advanced level will additionally obtain:

  • Skills in analysis of these issues, and being able to understand how they can be applied in businesses and organizations

The introductory level will provide an overview as indicated on the three main issues.
The basic level will present more details in how technology, methods, and data is utilised.
The advanced level will provide cases and discussion on how these technologies/topics may be developed and applied in business and organizations.

Pre-module material provided

For students without prior knowledge about computer networks, material will be available that gives sufficient introduction to enable them to follow the module at basic and advanced levels.

Additional material will be provided in terms of examples.
