Usage of digital development tools in production / industrial engineering

Description of the company
Autoliv is the world leader in automotive safety systems. All major car manufacturers (OEMs) are supplied by us. Worldwide 66.000 employees in 27 countries pursue the vision „Saving more lives“.
In the plan Elmshorn near Hamburg, the focus is on the development and production of seat belts as well as the associated processes and their standardization. These are developed according to very high external and internal requirements.


Initial Situation
Both when commissioning new machines and when changing existing production equipment, PLC programming is a big work package. Programming often only begins when mechanical assembly of the system is nearly finished. In the case of program modifications of serial systems, these often have to be taken out of production planning for a longer period of time so that the programmers can work and test the system. This is neither efficient nor economical.


Problem Description
In the industrial environment are currently many buzz words. These are for example "Digital Twin" and the "Virtual Commissioning". Very often generalized scenarios are presented and the details have to be adapted to the real environment in operation. Often all machine documentation is available, but it is unclear if and how it can be used for programming or simulation. The concrete target is defined flexibly based on the team composition in a kick-off workshop. Skills in CAD design and programming (e.g., Siemens TIA) would be welcome in order to implement the developed concept of theoretical consideration. Ideally, appropriate software licenses are available.

1.    Development, presentation and evaluation of requirements, benefits for Autoliv
2.    Market analysis of Systems (Basis: CAD SolidWorks / Inventor + Siemens TIA)
3.    Definition of use cases and related concepts
4.    Exemplary implementation of a use case

Depending on the project team, the focus can be on certain points

Project Responsibilities
1.    Development of solution concepts through literature study and contact the experts
2.    Definition and implementation of possible use cases
3.    Presentation of the results
