Summary

Logistics and mobility are of extraordinarily high relevance for the economic future of society. A World Bank survey of the Logistics Performance Index reveals the existence of a connection between a country’s economic prosperity and its logistics performance. This applies especially to Germany as a business location that is characterized by a low level of vertical integration in manufacturing along with a high level of integration in globally distributed added value activities. A high level of innovation and a sustainable use of resources are key prerequisites if German industry is to remain competitive in the long term especially as resources grow increasingly scarce. Acatech notes in its latest position paper that integrated development of mobility and logistics is the precondition for greater quality of life and prosperity. This applies to Hamburg in particular as a business location and as Germany’s foreign trade gateway as well as one of its largest metropolitan areas.

Against this background the research priority is to achieve sustainable added value by developing sustainable logistics and transportation systems while maintaining an integrated approach to logistics and mobility

From these the following added value areas can be deduced that constitute the research center’s key topics:

  • Subprojects such as the following are pursued in the Supply Chain & Networks area to achieve cross-company added value
    • Identification of success factors for logistics systems in connection with cross-company cooperation
    • Utilization of social software to spread in-company sustainability know-how
    • Analysis of interaction between supply chain design and planning and political frameworks

  • Subprojects such as the following are pursued in the Production & Logistics area to achieve internal company added value:
    • Logistics-oriented product and process design
    • Develop age-appropriate work in production logistics
    • Implementing closed-loop supply chain management of hybrid production systems
  • Subprojects such as the following are pursued in the Transportation Logistics area to design transportation networks and logistics nodes and their information logistics:
    • Increasing the permeability of logistics nodes, especially of ports and airports
    • Developing alternative transportation systems for transshipment-intensive goods
    • Implementing innovation management in transportation and logistics
    • Improving safety in the air freight transportation chain
    • Developing revenue management methods for container shipping
  • Subprojects such as the following are pursued in the Mobility & Transportation area to overcome space and design transportation networks against the background of societal change processes:
    • Developing integrated land utilization and commercial traffic planning
    • Analyzing the importance of energy price changes and scarcity of resources for logistics and transportation systems

The Logistics and Mobility Research Center will conduct research and deliver results on the framework conditions required for future logistics and transportation systems. Linking logistics and mobility, traditionally a part of different disciplines, in a common research center is both nationally and internationally an important USP. The TUHH, as compared with other universities and providers of logistics training courses in Hamburg and Germany, offers a unique combination of management and technical logistics, transportation and mobility along with (innovation) management. In terms of subject coverage this area is extensively positioned with seven chairs in logistics and mobility, a Fraunhofer Institute for Maritime Systems, and five chairs in added value management.

The research center will coordinate interdisciplinary networking of the TUHH institutes involved in logistics and mobility to jointly acquire and successfully work on third-party research projects (BMBF, DFG, AiF, EU, industry, etc.) and with establishing a research training group in 2013/14. New scientific findings, resulting joint publications and active transfers to the business sector are intended to achieve a widely visible external impact for the TUHH.
