2240: Bioelectrochemical and Engineering Fundamentals to Establish Electro-Biotechnology for Biosynthesis – Power to Value-Added Products (eBiotech)

Electro-biotechnology for biosynthesis is an emerging field at the interface of electrochemistry and biotechnology. Instead of using carbohydrates as an energy source for biosynthesis as in the classic biotechnology, electro-biotechnology uses primarily regenerative electricity to drive biosynthesis and can overcome inherent major limitations of present bioproduction systems in terms of atom efficiency and product yield. It is especially useful in using low energy-containing wastes or effluents like CO2, providing thus an ideal solution for Power-to-Product and circular economy. Therefore, it has an immense potential to transform biotechnology for better addressing global challenges i.e. an increasing world population (food shortage), rise in CO2 emission and depletion of fossil raw materials. Internationally electro-biotechnology is in its infancy and fundamental researches in both natural sciences and engineering are desperately needed to realize its promise. The SPP 2240 timely brings together German research groups from microbiology, (bio)electrochemistry, bio-thermodynamics, electrochemical engineering, materials sciences, systems and synthetic biology, and bioprocess engineering to work jointly on fundamentals of electro-biotechnology for biosynthesis. The coordinator of this SPP is Prof. Dr. An-Ping Zeng, head of the Institute for Bioprocess and Biosystems Engineering, Hamburg University of Technology.
