The Institute of Technical Microbiology
... was founded in 1990. Since then over 45 students conducted their doctoral thesis under the supervision of Prof. Garo Antranikian.
The institute is located in the NIT-Building on the campus of Hamburg University of Technology only a 20 minutes ride by train to down-town Hamburg.
Over 20 researchers are currently working in modern laboratories which were set up in January 2001 and which are equipped with the most advanced technologies needed for modern biotechnology.
Our facilities allow the following activities: isolation and identification of bacteria, archaea and microbial communities; cultivation of extremophiles and recombinant strains; intelligent screening and exploitation of microbial genomes; cloning and expression of genes from extremophiles; purification and supply of biocatalysts; biochemical studies; biotransformation; development of environmentally sustainable technologies.
