Welcome to the Institute of Engineering Thermodynamics at Hamburg University of Technology (TUHH)


Engineering Thermodynamics describes the interaction of energies and modes of energy transport as well as the limitations on energy conversions in processes. It is therefore the basic discipline for energy and process engineering.

The Institute of Engineering Thermodynamics at TUHH does experimental and simulation-based research in the area of complex energy systems. One focus is the dynamic simulation of integrated energy systems (gas, heat and power) using the TransiEnt Library and the evaluation of energy systems with respect to economics, CO2 emissions and resilience. Another focus is the implementation and evaluation of power-to-heat-to-power energy storage systems. Dynamic system simulation is also used to develop CO2 capture processes improve reference measurement standards and test novel building control systems. Cooling and Air Conditioning are subject to several experimental research projects for stationary and mobile applications. Novel cooling architectures have to be implemented in aircraft, as more electronic components are implemented, and battery coolings strategies have to be developed for electric vehicles. Sustainable air conditioning systems are also needed for buildings, such as local cooling with phase change materials (PCM) or humidification and dehumidification using sorption materials.

Lectures in Engineering Thermodynamics and Heat Transfer are given for bachelor students. Lectures in Heat Engineering, Air Conditioning Systems, System Simulation and Gas Grids as well as lab experiments are offered for master students.
