Z2: Investigation of multi-scale structured materials systems with synchron and neutron radiation

Non-destructive examination of newly developed materials is of central importance for the SFB. On the one hand, only the latest maximun-resolution characterization methods allow sufficient knowledge of the hierarchical structure. On the other hand, it will be essential to correlate the mechanical, electrical, and photonic properties of the different projects in-situ with structural changes. It is crucial that appropriate investigation methods are available for our range of different length scales (a few nm up to mm) in the various hierarchical levels of the materials systems in the SFB.

Those experimental results are set to be important input parameters for theoretical models, which are used for the precise prediction of materials properties. Finally the experimental results of this project will be directly used to tailor structured multi-scale materials with respect to their applications

To this end, the central project Z2 combines appropriate skills in the use of synchrotron and neutron radiation facilities, for all projects of the SFB. All relevant length scales are covered by those experimental techniques. Of particular significance are procedures that use the excellent focus of high-brillance synchrotron radiation, thus achieving a spatial resolution of less than 10 nm. These procedures are specifically developed in Z2, further advancements being fostered by the novel materials systems of the SFB 986.
