Innovations in Teaching

Aim of innovations in teaching is the didactic revision of courses. Supported by the ZLL at the TUHH, funds are made available to the institute via TUHH-internal Innovation-in-Teaching-Calls in order to fundamentally improve courses with innovative ideas. At the MLS the following teaching innovations are or have been carried out so far:

LectureProject Management
DescriptionIn the context of the ZLL Call 16 on the topic of e-examinations, the use of a project management software will be integrated into the lecture Project Management. This software should prepare the participants in the best possible way for their daily work. During the lecture, exercises are presented to learn how to use the software. Thus, as a supplement to important theoretical basics and methods, the ability to use project management software in practice is taught. Consequently, these skills are also tested in the exam. In the course of this, the exam is converted into a digital exam. On the one hand, this allows tasks to be carried out with the project management software and, on the other hand, influencing factors such as illegible writing are minimized by means of free text fields.

Interactive Online Tutorials for Independent Learning of Simulation Basics

CourseSimulation of Transport and Handling Systems
DescriptionStudents should be given the opportunity to learn independently the basic handling of the simulation software Plant Simulation®. The innovation in teaching aimed at enabling students to apply and extend relevant aspects of object-oriented programming to the tasks they have been set after completing the online tutorials, which consist of three learning modules. Videos and short examples support the understanding and enable students to independently deal with the software and the corresponding programming language.

Maritime Supply Chain

CourseTransport and Handling Technology

Students should work independently in groups on a complex task within the framework of research learning. Students should independently work on the transport of different types of goods (containers, wheat, project cargo, iron ore and crude oil) using the entire maritime supply chain and then apply their knowledge to case studies. Each group works on a part (pre-carriage, main carriage, on-carriage) of the corresponding supply chain. There are two case studies to be worked on. In the first case study the students should prepare the literature on the different components of the maritime supply chain and present the processes of the respective part of the maritime supply chain. In the second case study, students should work out the key performance indicators (e.g. transport times, storage costs, service level of shipping companies, etc.) and apply them to the case study. This group work enables the students to work on what they have learned throughout the semester. In addition, students will get to know real challenges in relation to group work, e.g. in terms of resource and time management and coordination in project groups.

Haptic Planning of a Container Terminal

DescriptionIn this course, the planning of a container terminal is to be implemented by the students in group work using planning software ("visTABLE®touch") at the haptic planning table. The students put themselves in the role of the terminal planner. Several different terminal layouts are to be worked out for the terminal operator, taking into account specifications (e.g. handling performance, available quay wall, depth of terminal area, etc.). Each project team focuses on the design of a terminal operating system. The fact that all teams with different solution approaches pursue the same goal (realisation of the required handling volume under space restrictions) enables the participants to critically question the layout alternatives of other teams and to stimulate a constructive discussion.
